I lost a daughter at 19 weeks due to an umbilical cord accident 4 months ago. My husband and I went through extensive genetic testing and chromisonal testing and it all came back normal. My high risk ob says it was a freak accident but the more I read it doesn't make sense. I know am 10 1/2 weeks pregnant and all is well to this point. I will be kept under close supervision as well as ultrasounds to measure the cord. Does anyone have any ideas on things I can do to be safe? My doc says no but i'd like to hear from women who have gone through this as well and maybe gone on to have a normal pregnancy again. Please help.

You have to believe in what your doctor told you of the episode being a FREAK ACCIDENT. That is what the prolapse of an umbilical cord really is. Normally the baby’s head comes down first through the birth canal. However, in some cases it may be a hand, or a leg, or the face, the knees, etc. Sometimes the umbilical cord gets entangled around the baby’s neck during the pregnancy, or during the birth and it can lead to disastrous results. There are ways to circumvent a disaster, but the measures have to be swift and are to be taken by the attendant conducting the delivery immediately after they are first noted. Therefore, when you go in for delivery, and if it a vaginal delivery, do ask the attendants to observe your birth canal for any cord prolapse or any other complication for the delivery.

If you continue to remain so much apprehensive, it will not be good for your child. There is a definite means of taking care of your apprehensions- go in for a elective caesarian delivery.

You were very unlucky. I'm sorry this happened to you. It also happened to my father's secretary at 9 months pregnancy. It was very traumatic for them too. I hope everything goes well with this pregnancy but really, there is nothing that can stop it from happening. You can not control the baby' s movements in the womb. Pray and have faith. Your new baby will be ok. Dont do any weird stuff people tell you to do. There is a lot of false beliefs out there. Its always better to consult with your doc or nurse. Call them when you have questions even if you feel like you are a pest , is better this way...

I'm not a doctor, but I think yours is right.
I don't think that there is a way to stop a "cord accident". The baby floats, and moves around in there doing front and back rolls. You can't stop your baby from moving.
I think that you are just worried because of your last pregnancy. Which is understandable. But the best thing you can do for your baby is to not stress yourself out over it. Only worry if your docotr tells you to.

When I was born the umbilical cord tied into a not and was blowing up like a balloon. I dont think there is much you can do to prevent these kind of accidents.

Congratulations on the baby! I am very happy for u and you both are probably really happy also. I think the major thing you can do here is pray. Sorry if you are not religious but I believe that god will help you and your family to help this baby survive. I am sure everything is going to be ok. I wouldnt worry. )

I had the same incident happen to me. however my child survived. And I am truly sorry about your loss. However i don't think there is anything you can do. The Bible says the Lord gives and the Lord (God) takes away. We have to be careful that we don't put all our faith in medical doctors and science. because after all they are only human like you and I. And they have their limitations. Just meditate, pray and if you never have before trust God. If you do I can almost guarantee everything will go just fine.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It's really just an unfortunate accident and nothing that you can work to prevent during pregnancy.

Sorry for your loss
There is no way to prevent anything like that from happening.
