Vibrato was actually made trendy by Mel Torme...who did it because he was tone deaf and couldn't pinpoint the note exactly so he fluctuate between the 2. You don't need a vibrato to be a good singer, some people do it and do it well, so people do it and it sounds like a sheep. I cannot tell you how many auditions I have gone too where I swear everyone thought they were Mariah Carey or Dean Martin and all I heard were sheep in pain. Don't force it. Not all singers vibrato and not all shows call for it. It comes with time, you can have the best coach and still never get it....as they say honey...."ya either got it or ya don't"
but for heavens sake don't force or fake it....that's worse.

Two methods, one considered proper technique, the other considered sloppy. Properly speaking, the vibration should come from the diaphragm, and it's not a matter of the notes bending up and down, but rather of alternating in intensity. But most singers do the bendy vibrato, which can easily get to be too much.
Oddly enough, the best training to get a vibrato is to work as hard as you can to hold a note evenly, without vibration. When you can hold a long even note, then you'll feel how little variation in your breath support can give the voice a warm, pitch neutral vibrato.

They technique is called "Vibrato", it is much the same as the when a guitarist (think B.B King) pulls or bends a string repeatedly.
Now what I think you are actually referring to is an operatic style. I'm visualizing a tenor who holds a note for what seems like minutes. That "vibration" you are referring to, and from my own personal experience, happens as a result of exhaling with an extreme amount of control.
If you wanted to practice this technique I would tell you something like this:
#1 Stand up straight, with good posture. (From acting classes you always hear "Breathe from the diaphram", it is exactly the same principle. If you are having trouble with that, put you hands to your stomach just below your ribcage and belt a note - if you feel nothing in your stomach and feel it all in your throat then keep practicing, it does take some getting used to)
#2 Warm up with scales, or a song that you know well.
#3 Now try extending some of the long notes, for as long as you can hold it. You should notice as you are exhaling that the voice will naturally start to "vibrate".
Some singers are able to do this on "command", the same principle applies as above, though very likely they are taking shorter breaths.
I hope this helps you out, and above all else Keep Singing!

Dear Brian,
Singing has many styles-if you are interested in musical theatre-you will want to project your sound well to the audience. So..you will need to learn diaphramatic breathing and bel-canto techniques-(Beautiful singing). A good vocal coach can help you with this.
In classical singing-vibrato is ideally 7 beats per second. When the vocal chords are damaged or older, or the breathing technique is not fully implemented, the vibrato (intervals of sound) can be very loose and wobbly- and sometimes it can be a very unpleasant sound indeed. Hope this is of some help.

dont try to push it or anything, i was once told that vibrato is caused by a singer whose voice is completely relaxed when he/she is singing. so relax your voice, and hopefully it will come naturally. if not, also try asking a choir director or another person who is talented in singing and has great vibrato. oh, and one last tip, if you can see your voice box moving as you do it, its wrong.

One tip- don't force it. Please. Listen to other males, but DONT copy their voice. Just listen to their teqnique. Get a male voice coach, or ask a classical singer.
