I live in Pennsylvania and I have a 2004 Honda Element that recommends 5W-40 oil. Not knowing this I changed the oil with 10W-30. Will that be ok until the next oil change?

As long as it is still fairly warm, you PROBABLY haven't done MUCH damage.
Oil that is multi-viscosity that we use today is developed for several purposes, among them is lubrication.
The engine in the little Honda has been designed with very close tolerances, and Honda wants to see 5W-30 SAE in the crankcase because the heavier viscosity oil runs the risk of flooding the bearings, as well as not being able to reach some parts of the engine when it is cooler, and therefore some lubrication and heat transfer is lost.
So, don't be alarmed. You SHOULD change the oil again at your convenience, even if you don't go the full distance on this oil. It will serve you and your little car well to make this sacrifice of cost and effort.
Good Luck, and when you can, make it a point to spend some time with your owner's manual. ;-}
(When I have the occasion to investigate the owner's manual of most cars, there are only two pages i find much use; the radio page and the A/C/ page. Not much of the rest of it get used.

check your manual cuz sometimes it'll mention other oils you can temporarily use. You should go back to 10W-30 on the next oil change. I doubt 5W-20 can sub for 10W-30 though. Just go return it.

of course you can, 5w 40 is usually a winter oil summer you need to run a heavier oil, the heat breaks the oil down. it will be ok till your next oil change.

yes you should be fine. 10w-30 is a thicker oil so in the winter it would take longer to warm up your car. because the viscocity is higer than the 5w-30. you should be fine.

you should be fine the only problem lies in the warranty. If you have a claim they may not cover it. The newer cars are very strict about oil weights. I think you should be using 5w20 though not 5w40. 5w40 is a synthetic oil mostly made for European vehicles. Check your cap again and see if it says 5w40 or 5w20. Most Honda's and Fords are using 5w20.
