I think first impressions last forever, unless you have a lot of contact with the person. Everybody has a bad day every once in a while but that doesn't mean anything if you get the chance to get with them on a good day. I meet a lot of people in my field of work and I don't judge on the first impression. Some one you meet for the first time might be totally different the next time. Thanks

Depends.

If you get a chance to know the person a little more, the impression may change ...but then again, that's no longer "first impression" but second impression ? or subsequent impression if you want to be very precise on the "terminology".

However, if you're in a situation of first impression but you do not have the chance to know the person a little more, then the only impression you would have of that person would be that lasting first impression...

They last if they are accurate... they fade if your first impression was not an impression of that person's characteristic personality. In other words, if they were being themselves, they last... If they aren't being themselves when you form your first impression, and you spend more time with them, the impression will fade or change.

The "lasting" impression one makes on another is dependent upon what type impression was made.

If you've met someone who has impressed you favorably, you'll either be even more impressed the more you get to know them or become disenchanted. The reason being one's true self is never shown to strangers.

If they've impressed you in a negative manner you'll probably never get to know them because you won't want to; therefore, you have a lasting impression.

That first impression will never change. Everything else may change for better or worse but that first impression will always be what it originally was.

I'll never forget how my jaw hit the floor the first time I saw my wife, no matter what happens in our relationship.

I like mac n' cheese, but I'll never forget that the first time I ate it as a kid I thought it was disgusting.

Well, first impressions always remain in your memory. What changes is whether your first impression remains as your official judgement on the person's character. Depending on how long you interact with the person, your idea of them can change from your first impression, or it can just be the same idea just enhanced.

Yes they last RIGHT up until you make a second impression. And then a third...and fourth...

But really, if a people are always growing and changing, then its your impression of them should always be open enough to change with them.

I really think you know the answer already by reading the subline, so I see we've had simular experiences. I'm glad I don't go for first impressions, for me they are usally guided by a past experience, looking for a frame of referience. The person reminds me of... the person sounds just like..... I'll relate a personal experience that helped me with this, a person I'd be in meetings with on a regular basis spoke I found myself feeling uncomfortable when she did, I shut her out, the day she spoke and I found myself looking at my wrist at a watch I didn't have, I realized I had a issue. I talked to a friend of mine about me "looking" at my wrist and he gave me this advice. Next time she speaks at a meeting go up to her afterwords and tell her you liked what she had to say. So the next oppurtunity when she spoke I listened what she had to say and liked it, it was very informative. Afterwords i went up to her and told her so. I found out she taught 4th. grade, that connection was made, she reminded me of every teacher I ever had and thats what I felt. Since then I've learned to keep a open mind on first impressions, look at new people as a blank slate and what gets written on it is after I meet them.

Sure they do. But as goes for everything that happened yesterday, it's in the past, so if it was something negative they portrayed themselves as, it can be let go if they prove to be a better person than that. I don't think first impressions should be held against anyone.
