They decided Pluto was disqualified b/c it has an elliptical orbit that crosses Neptune's orbit about twice in several hundred years. I'm really sad about it! I guess they decided it was a planet in the 1930s, and then they just called it one, and now that they have found other solar systems, they need a better definition of "planet".

I see their reasoning, but I still think they should leave it alone. Pluto is named after the Roman god of the underworld. I think I'll buy some older astronomy books so that I can still see the solar system as I have always known it.

In its intial discovery in 1930, telescopes were simply not powerful enough to determine ithe planet's size accurately. Pluto has a high albedo, meaning it reflects a lot of light which makes it appear bigger. You have to keep in mind that Pluto is also VERY far away and they didn't have the Hubble Telescope a hundred years ago.

So now we have only eight, seems such a lonley solar system now :(

This isn't about "technology". New discoveries about the composition of the solar system have motivated a formal definition of planet.

We now know that Pluto is one of a very large number of bodies called Kuiper Belt objects. It isn't even the biggest one. If we continued to call Pluto a planet, soon we'd have to enlarge the number of planets to, possibly, thousands or tens of thousands of objects.

It's just progress in understanding the nature of our solar system.

Well, of course Pluto is not a planet. It was never a planet to begin with. Pluto is a dog.

I'd force them to reclassify Pluto as a planet the make them eat sandwichs made of ground Reese Witherspoon and call them Bimboburgers. Stupid scientists ruin everything for everybody. It took so long because they had to wait for the smart scientist who knew the truth to all die off

ok there are a few camps on this. either we add 3 more and keep pluto or we treat pluto as a satellite. it takes time for any major changes that involve mass meetings take a look at congress and what little they get accomplished
