You may be experiencing sleep paralysis. I have had this since I was 12. You feel like you are awake but you cannot speak or open your eyes . The first few times this happened to me , I thought I was dying. The doc's are not sure what causes this is each individual case.. It does have something to do with lack of oxygen to the brain. Now that I am older, as long as I don't sleep on my back, it rarely ever happens anymore. I think mine is related to my sleep apnea and my weight. When I was heavier- I had more of a problem with the apnea and the paralysis. You might want to be checked for sleep apnea-and to let them know you might have the paralysis too. Apnea is very dangerous thing to let go- the paralysis is mainly a side effect. Good luck, take care.

it is sleep paralisys.....it happens to me if i sellp on the couch with my head to far up...it is from lack of oxygen...thats why you feel out of breath when you wSleep paralysis is a condition characterized by temporary paralysis of the body shortly after waking up (known as hypnopompic paralysis) or, less often, shortly before falling asleep (known as hypnagogic paralysis).

The Nightmare, by Henry Fuseli (1781) is thought to be one of the classic depictions of sleep paralysis perceived as a demonic visitation.Physiologically, it is closely related to the normal paralysis that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, also known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is awakened from an REM state into essentially a normal fully awake state, but the bodily paralysis is still occurring. This causes the person to be fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, this state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations.

More often than not, sleep paralysis is believed by the person affected by it to be no more than a dream. This is the reason why there are many dream recountings which describe the person lying frozen and unable to move. The hallucinatory element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as simply a dream, as one might see completely fanciful objects in a room alongside the normal vision one can see.

What you have is nightmares. Most think a nightmare is when you dream something horrible, but a nightmare is when you are trying to wake up and can't. Course, usually when you are trying to wake it is because you are having a bad dream, but the dream itself does not have to be something unthinkable, just something you want to get away from.

Sylvia Browne has a book out called "Book of Dreams". The contents of this book will help you understand your dreams more. Do a search on her through the Internet, you will understand who she is. I personally own all of her books and have not read one that I would not read again. Good Luck. psb
