According to what type of fish you put into the tank...fresh water? Now is it going to be goldfish, or mollies, or guppies, or neon's...? When you go to purchase a tank, and fish, go to a pet store...wal-mart and such don't have a clue (I used to work for wal-mart in the fish department...I read up on fish and fish tank care...there is a book out "Aquariums for Dummy's" Most "Dummy" books are a good source of info (I've seen this book at Wal-mart in the fish department)...go to Barns and Noble if you have one in your area...you can read an entire book for free if you stay long enough!

I know I did not give you much info on your question, but good luck to you (I like Sword Tails...easy to breed, and if you breed them selectively, you can come up with unique markings...I did).

You'll need to cycle your tank before you buy the main fish, you can cycle your tank with fish you don't care about.
-----Buy this stuff called "cycle". http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html
Scroll down there is a graph, that makes it easier to get the new terminology.

Your local fish store will test your tank water for free, and advise you.
-Just bring them a water sample and ask them anything you have concerns about.

Get a siphon, you'll need to change 10% of the water, every week
Ask the fish store how to use it, it takes too long to explian on here.

Add cycle once a week, the bottle will tell you how much to add.
