Fastest Aircraft In The World
Technology

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, first flown in 1963, is the fastest operational aircraft to fly within earth's atmosphere. At an operational altitude of 80,000 feet the SR-71 can achieve speeds over 2,200 MPH or above Mach 3. The airframe is built almost exclusively of titanium to withstand the extreme heat generated and two Pratt and Whitney J-58 axial flow turbojets producing a total of 68,000 pounds of thrust.

The SR-71 officially set the air speed record on July 28, 1976 when it set a two way average speed of 2193 mph around a closed course in California.

Only the experimental X-15 surpasses the SR-71 for the outright records at Mach 6.72.

The freakin Blackbird is the fastest in operation, however NASA has made something faster.

Also, I have seen a show called modern fighing machines or somthing close to that on the *discovery channel -where they (U.S.) was taking about an protyotype that goes faster than the Blackbird and the one tested by NASA so, it depends..

Edit: I did some research and found this from NASA---

It's Official. X-43A Raises the Bar to Mach 9.6
Guinness World Records recognized NASA's X-43A scramjet with a new world speed record for a jet-powered aircraft - Mach 9.6, or nearly 7,000 mph. The X-43A set the new mark and broke its own world record on its third and final flight on Nov. 16, 2004.

In March 2004, the X-43A set the previous record of Mach 6.8 (nearly 5,000 mph). The fastest air-breathing, manned vehicle, the U.S. Air Force SR-71, achieved slightly more than Mach 3.2. The X-43A more than doubled, then tripled, the top speed of the jet-powered SR-71.

Lol, below me there is a guy freaking out. If your afraid of people go hide in your dam cave... and edit your pic thingy nickname

This is a great site that tells what the fastest official aircraft is, and what some top secret aircraft can do.

It's kind of relative. And depends on who you ask? I think the SR-71 Blackbird was/is the "fastest". It can travel at the edge of the atmosphere, and can travel the edge of the Earth atmosphere i.e. in space, thus ground speed relatively is faster than any other aircraft.

Technically speaking its the the space shuttle. Once out of the lower atmospehere it reaches velocities near Mach 25 (17,000 mph). Thats about 25 times the speed of sound.
