You could let them know you have it and will return it later. In my opinion...people are usually not THAT attatched to their pens. But there are exceptions.

This happened to me. I borrowed my friend's pen to write something and I forgot to return it. I wasnt aware of it until few days later and so was my friend. When I reminded her that I had her pen, she told me to keep it. Since we're thousand miles away (she's in SE Asia, while I'm in North America), I just told her that I'll keep it as keepsake. It makes sense. I still have the pen but I don't know where I put it. I know it's somewhere in my room.
In your case, if this person is a close friend, just tell him/her that you'll keep it for now. He/she might give it to you. If he/she asked for it, just give it back the next time you see each other. However, I don't think it makes sense to mail the pen. The postal fee might costs evenly with the pen.

Yes, I would turn around and return it if it was a good pen. I know myself, and if I called to let my friend know I had it, and would return it at our next visit, I could possibly lose it, or someone else at home might misplace it, so I'm better off returning something like that right away.

I would tell my friend that I had her pen. I'd call on the phone or something. Otherwise I'd be a thief. Some people don't consider that a friendly thing. This friend might not care about the pen, but it's that person's decision, not anyone else's.

It does not matter if it is a pen or something more expensive, it belongs to your "Friend". Yes you return it, I don't think it is worth turning around for but I would call them & let them know that you have it in safe keeping for them. The fact that you need to ask a question like this shows me a lack of moral clarity.

I would mail the pen and a card of apology.
Otherwise, I may place the pen in an envelope and deposit the envelope in their mailbox as a token of good citizenship.

It depends. If I have time, yes. If not, I would call and tell them I had it and that I'd return it to them the next time I saw them.

I would give it back the next time I saw them. If it was a good friend I might just conveniently forgot I had it.
