On Dragon Quest VIII for PS2 how do u get items behind the counters?

i haven't unsealed my copy of this game, but if it's anything like the previous 10-12 dragon warrior-esque games, there are treasure chests behind the counters for visible show only

think of it like display models, if they aren't in chests. or if they _are_ chests, it's just eye-candy, to make the room more full, and to explain where the shop-keep gets stuff

Either find a back door, or you can't access them.
