Forgive my boyish ingorance but isn't secret wirtapping only effective when its well...secret?
I doubt anyone is going to make incriminating calls when they know the government is wiretapping.
Is there any evidence to the contrary?

There has been no loss to the effectiveness of any wiretapping program in the US.

The existing laws (FISA), dating back to 1978, allow law enforcement personnel to obtain secret warrants for the purpose of foreign surveillance, without ever having to notify the person under investigation. These warrants can also be obtained after the tap is already in place when necessary.

Since the suspect is never notified of the tap, even when a warrant is issued, and since the FISA court itself is secret and not open to the public, there is no difference in level of secrecy between a tap issued pursuant to a FISA warrant and one installed illegally. In both case, the suspect doesn't know it's there.

Bush didn't violate federal law for his warrantless wiretapping program because it was more effective. He violated federal law simply because he chose not to follow those procedures. In other words, simply because he couldn't be bothered.

It was never very effective, secret or otherwise. Civil rights violations and illegality aside, it creates far too much information for the NSA to sift through expeditiously.

I believe wire tapping saved thousands of lives when Scotland yard interrupted the plot to blow up many Aircraft flying to the States. It has become necessary.

Not. Do you really think terrorists would still be using phones. I mean come ON. When Bush says give me the tools necceseary to fight terrorism, it seems to me one of them involves ripping up the constitution.

If it wasn't effective, people wouldn't be trying to stop it. Only people with something to hide are upset. If the govenment listened to my conversations, they would give up out of boredom. If it will help catch terrorists go for it.

You aren't ignorant. You are stating the obvious that everyone else seems to want to overlook.

How well would drug stings work if the "buyer" showed up to the meeting in a DEA jacket?
