Don't reformat, because if you do that, things may be overwritten. There are no do it yourself answers for this case. You can try taking the case apart and hooking the drive up as a slave and trying that, but if you get the directory is unreadable/corrupt, then you have a choice. Invest in some data recovery software, which may or may not work, or the afforementioned data recovery specialist. I would shop around if you choose a company because Drivesavers will charge you outrageous amounts if a corrupt boot sector is your only problem. Contact me off list for more info.

The directory file is used by the computer to know where the files are stored in hard drive. If it is corrupted or become unreadable, the computer will not be able to retrieve anything out of that drive. The best solution is to take your hard drive to data recovery company to restore them for you.

This problem occurs on disks that do not contain a media descriptor byte in the BIOS parameter block (BPB) of the boot sector. Some older preformatted floppy disks do not contain a media descriptor byte. Older product disks may also not have the media descriptor byte.

The media descriptor indicates the type of medium currently in a drive. With MS-DOS and Windows 95, you do not have to set the media descriptor byte. Therefore this problem does not occur with these older operating systems.

The media descriptor byte is located in the BPB of the boot sector at offset 21 (15h) and in the first byte of each FAT on the disk.
To resolve this problem, re-format the floppy disk with Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003.

Probably the easiest thing to try is to first try a different cable.

Next, get another external drive "enclosure", (a kit without the actual drive). This will allow you to move the actual hard drive from the old external drive shell, to a new one. If the problem is with the power supply or interface with the external drive enclosure, you are saved.

If the drive itself if failed, you will be better off taking it to a professional to try and recover the data.

Good luck

Sounds like your HDD is corrupt. Try pluging it into another computer maybe? If not (this isn't cheap!) http://www.drivesavers.com/

A backup harddrive... your supposed to have the same data you want to keep on TWO or more drives in case one fails.
