if the file ends with .dmg, you start with doppelclicking on that file. Then, you just need to copy the .app file that appears to your Users "Applications" directory. If you do not see this directory, you will find a link in Finder.

In Mac OSX, the files that end with .app are the programs you want to use, not some setup program that installs the software.

This means that you do not even have to copy the file to the applications directory. It is just a good place to put your application, but you can put it anywhere if you like.

if you open the .dmg file and you find a file that ends with .pkg, double click on that file to start the installation process.

.bin files are archives that can be extracted by a program like stuffit expander ( http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html ). If excel starts after you double clicked the file, it means that this is the default application associated with that file type. If you install a tool like stuffit, it should override this setting.

Inside the archiv, you will most likely find either an .app or an .pkg file.

Some have an installer that you double click on. Some all you have to do is drag the icon for the program onto you applications folder and it will install it there.

Double click on the icon if you have StuffIT Expander. Otherwise, download StuffIT Expander first, install it and then double click on the .bin icon again to install it.

.bin files need the Stuffit Expander. it's free.

If it still opens up in Excel, then right click and select open with Stuffit Expander.
