Your best bet is to buy a 2.5" external drive kit. You can remove the hard drive from the notebook and put it into the metal case. These kits genrally hook up to your USB port and are powered from the connection. Most XP PCs will auto detect the drive and mount it as a removable drive similar to a flash drive. You can then remove all of your data (assuming the drive is mostly OK). Make sure the drive doesn't make squealing or clicking noises as that might mean physical failure. Another hot tip... put the drive in the freezer for 2-4 hours... believe it or not, cooling the drive sometimes buys you 20-30 minutes of funtion to get those files off.
