I'm a leftist but I hear a lot of rightists out there talking about Condoleeza Rice for '08. I don't think that'd work because she's linked to Bush now and his approval rating's down... But still, for you to say she should be president. What has she don't that's good? I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know. What gives her the edge to be president?

Well, Condi's been the pillar that holds up the foreign policy, which is both a good and a bad thing by association.

She hasn't spoken out on anything as an individual, without consulting Bush's gut first, and I don't really see that previous "jobs" in the government is something that should qualify her to be president. It's plenty different, and often that "fresh view" of things is essential... She might be more encumbered by the decisions they are making right now, than another candidate, say for example Gore, who hasn't been much in the governmental loop, and thus can make his own decisions without having to worry about the credibility of shooting down stuff the previous government did.

What views does she hold? I don't know, and no one else knows either...

No doubt Ms. Rice is an admirable person. She's a brilliant scholar and some would say she has been a voice of reason of late in the chorus of unreasonable voices around Bush. But I don't think Condoleezza Rice has demonstrated anything like the qualities needed in a President, even if I actually agreed with her ideas or philosophy.

BUT -

The policy area in which she rose to the top was the Eastern Bloc / Soviet era cold war. No doubt she was a true expert in the field, but the field is not very relevant to the problems confronting the USA today.

She has virtually no knowledge of or experience in matters of domestic policy. Indeed, her views on many such areas are largely unknown or at least unstated.

She has been an advocate of Bush's aggressive foreign policy, even in the days when she was the voice of aggression and Colin Powell the voice of caution among Bush advisors. This, IMHO, shows very poor judgement of world opinion and likely reactions to American actions. For an example of this, read her editorial (linked below) on "Why We Know Iraq Is Lying". Dogmatic belief overriding reasoned scholarship.

She has not been a voice for an assertive policy vis a vis Israel, keeping it away from the President's top agenda until tensions boiled over into the recent "war" between Israel and Lebanon. Her recent shuttle diplomacy has been energetic but so far barren of results.

Although she was a popular and reasonably social academic, since becoming an important political figure she has established virtually no personal relationships with heads of government, foreign ministers, or other world leaders. At international meetings she is said to keep to herself and fail to work on such important personal relationships - something, I must grudgingly admit, at which Bush is terrific (but then, so was Stalin.... ;-) ).

In short, she's a scholar rather than a do-er, and her scholarship seems to be off the mark on important aspects of foreign policy, which is, or at least ought to be, her specialty. She may be ideally suited to being a troubleshooter for a very strong, very personality--based leader like Bush, providing him with loyal support and academic reasoning behind his less than intellectual judgements, but I have seen no leadership qualities to respect or admire. Her academic success was achieved by her brilliance, not by her personal qualities or achievements in leadership and courage. If she ever tells the President "No!" I will begin to admire those a bit more.

Incidentally, for the exact opposite set of characteristics, and for his rise to the top in a field that is still quite racist, I have great admiration for Colin Powell.

Let me guess, your a Hillary fan. Condoleeza has done more than, Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Nancy Pelosy, and Howard Dean put together in terms of helping out our nation and the relationships of other nations. We could only hope for someone like her to run for president. She would absolutley have my vote. She is one of the smartest and sincerest person that we have in the White House now.

"What gives her the edge to be president?"

0 - Very hard worker.
1 - World's smartest woman (really).
2 - Black female.
3 - Stone fox who's got her hair workin' and her outfits clickin'.
4 - Better female option than Queen Hillary the Great.
5 - Makes sense (uncommon).
6 - Experienced national security adviser.
7 - Experienced foreign policy adviser.
8 - Experienced Secretary of State.

No particular order to that very short list of her Presidential qualities.
