I definitely do NOT think they are diseases..here is why--a disease is generally something that you cannot stop from occurring, that just will happen regardless..while alcoholism and drug addiction are choices that people make...I definitely believe it is a weakness...but the main thing is that it is a choice...therefore it can only be classified as an addiction. There are plenty of people who drink and do drugs..but only recreationally, and they do not get addicted--it all comes down to self control. Those who do not have it tend to become addicted. They think they are "escaping" from their problems when in all actuality they are only adding to them
It really makes me mad when people call it a disease, it's not fair to classify it that way-it's addiction plain and simple.

VERY debatable question....to some degree it is an illness, but everyone has free will......weakness in some cases. My husband was a drug addict and has been clean for almost 10 years, because he chooses it. He chose to leave that environment and those people that tempted him, and it's one of the best things he's ever done, maybe even the best!

It starts as weakness and ends as a disease. A person has a choice whether or not to take a first drink, or shoot up for the first time. There comes a point, though, after a person starts down that road that they can’t get off of that track without help.

I think it's both when you do drugs and addicted to them then you take them over and over and over again then you start to feel weak but you are so addicted that you can't stop so then it turns into a disease or maybe visversa you get the disease then you start to feel weak it can go anyway.

Not the same. Alcholism is a disease. Drug Addiction is a weakness in the human phisiology - causing an addiction.

Diseases. Until I went to treatment I thought it was a weakness, but there is proof that it is a disease. And it is treatable. Insurance to keep it in remission is cheap. All I gotta do is go to meetings, work the steps, and trust God. It isn't easy, but is is simple.
Jazz, alcholism and drug addiction cannot be CURED.

Is is a very debatable subject..in my opinion they are weakness..they are outlets to reality..they cannot deal with the pain of what the world and those around them..so they start taking things that makes them feel better, but what they don't realize that those outlets only brings further pain..to truly be able to deal with life's trails you need to go before the Lord in prayer..that is the only way to deal with what life throws at you

In reality the weakness comes from within which when utilized brings forth the disease that your weakness cannot control. The solution in most cases involves professional help, but more importantly- a strong commitment- on your part!!!

It sure is. Just like there's the whole debate of anorexia being a disease or lifestyle.
Seems like a vicious circle to me.
Weaknesses (urge to drink or use pills for example followed by that physical act) -> in excess cause a disease -> which causes weakness (urge to drink or use pills for example!)
:)
