Once an egg has matured in the ovary it is released into the fallopian tube. It will travel a bit and then wait for some sperm. By the time it is 12 hours old it is not very viable and the chance of fertilization is very dramatically decreased. Within a few more hours the unfertilized egg will have died.

This is a good question as I want an answer too. I've been testing positive with an ovulation kit since Sunday and today is Thursday. Yesterday was my last positive test. That's 4 days of positive testing....

you have between 12 and 24 hours to get pregnant. If there is no sperm waiting around for the egg your chances of pregnancy are very slim. Sperm can live for 5 days in the womb.
