A great '60s band, with Guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page (at different times).

Led Zeppelin was originally going to be called the New Yardbirds.

Numerous personnel changes mean there isn't a definitive Yardbirds line-up. However, Keith Relf (vocals), Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar, later bass), Jim McCarty (drums) and Paul Samwell-Smith (bass, until mid-66) formed the stable part of the band, initially with Top Topham on lead guitar.
Their first album, "Five Live Yardbirds" was recorded with Eric Clapton on lead guitar at London's Marquee Club.
Clapton left, not pleased with the pop direction of the band, just before the single "For Your Love" brought the Yardbirds fame both throughout the UK and internationally.
The second LP, known today as "Roger the Engineer" but originally as "The Yardbirds", featured Jeff Beck, the lead guitarist who was a member during their most successful period.
"Little Games", the third album, was not released in the United Kingdom, as popularity declined.
And the final LP was barely released at all, being a live set which pointed the way to Led Zeppelin, formed by Beck's replacement on lead, Jimmy Page. This album is currently only available on bootlegs.
A succession of not only lead guitarists, but also managers and producers, mean that their LP and CD discography is rather disjointed.
Since splitting in 1968, Topham, Clapton, Beck, Page, Relf and McCarty have enjoyed varying levels of recording success. Relf died in 1976 after being electrocuted at home. Samwell-Smith became a music industry producer (after some production experience with The Yardbirds), and Dreja a photographer.
-- Hope that helps.

The Yardbirds are a legendary Psychedelic rock band that helped set the scene for bands like The Doors and Pink Floyd. Nobody in any band can boast the talent that this band had, at some sessions they had all three British guitar gods sitting down for a play. Their music did not get radio time cause it wasn't catchy and poppy enough for the American stations, but in England where they were already realizing what good music The Yardbirds were making, they were almost overplayed. Their last great album (train kept a rollin) featured Jimmy Page on both bass and lead guitar and Jeff Beck on Bass and lead guitar.

An awesome band from the 60s. They were noted for starting the careers of three of rock music's most famous guitarists, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. A blues based band whose sound evolved into experimental pop rock, they had a string of hits including “For Your Love”, “Over, Under, Sideways, Down” and “Heart Full Of Soul”. They were a crucial link between British R&B and psychedelia; they set the framework for heavy metal explored further by Led Zeppelin and their guitarists were extremely influential in music. They pioneered almost every guitar innovation of the '60s: fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, improved amplification, and were one of the first to put an emphasis on guitar virtuosity and experimentation. They eventually evolved into Led Zeppelin, once Jimmy Page became the leader and the rest of the members left after several unsuccessful efforts to keep them in, forcing Page to find replacements in the likes of John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, and John Bonham.
