Americans are weird this way. I am not trying to be judgemental. Their morality is different than ours, but it does seem strange:
pint of beer bad = gun good
spliff bad = automatic hand gun good
top-less sunbathing by adults bad = teenagers in tiny bikinis and wet t-shirt contests good
contraception bad = death penalty good
Not to mention they pretend to advocate freedom while living in a 2 party state and locking people up for years in Guantanamo Bay without charging them with any offense......
I don't get them either. Wouldn't live there unless I was getting paid 6 figures.

I totally agree with you. I was born and live in the US, but I don't have a problem with topless sun bathing. Your body is still the same body you were born with no matter all the changes. Babies that go around naked are thought of as cute, whats the difference between that and simple sunbathing? Nudity has been, and still is associated with sexuality and being sexual. Nudity is something that veryone is born with, and sexuality is something you discover. People also need to understand that if little kids are exposed to nudity from parents ( getting dressed, showering), and then as the child gets older and is told not to look, or told that nudity is wrong it sends really mixed signals. Sexuality can include nudity (of course) but nudity should have undertones of sexuality. Sorry bout the rant...

Um, its kinda bad of you having lumped all americans together like that, wouldnt have been so bad, if you had just said all men over the age of 12........
Its not a big issue in the states, i think you might have just visited the wrong beaches, try the carribean, or sweeden
yes the human body is beautiful, but some are nicer than others..
if yours is great, i think you should have the right to show it off, where, when and as much as you want, but society, is very affraid, of cute sexy people, because you get jobs, sex, and everything else easier... i sugest you just live with the hate, and enjoy being cute..

I don't know why they think topless sunbathing is offensive, especially when mothers breast-feed in public. If one is immorral and the other is fine, it is just hypocritical ... unless, of course, the average Americam Male is still so immature that when he sees a breast in public, his immediate response is to run to it and suckle ...?
But you said it yourself - Puritanical. Not only about boobs but Clinton and what's-her-name lewinsky (which would only have produced a smirk in Europe) and alcohol and swearing and all kinds of censorship ... but never about the right to own a gun which is far worse than these other things.
The Mayflower was a ship that took the Putitans away from European coasts right? Everyone knows that. What they don't know, is that it got stuck in the Bermuda Triangle for centuries. Psychologically speaking anyway.
The rest of the world to them is immoral, dangerous and subversive ... and of course, they are right as they are the only ones with "freedom". Hee hee . Love some of them though. Really do. .

It is LEGAL to sunbathe topless in the USA. It's not common to see unless you go to the "gay" section of the beach or a very secluded area at the beach. I live in Brooklyn, NY and you won't see anyone topless unless you go to the area's I mentioned above. Personally, I agree it's a sad state of affairs here. Every newsstand sells porno magazines, every cable network has over 100 porn channels and children can access either of these quite easily. I enjoy the freedom of going topless even though I know there are straight men hanging out in the "gay" section only to catcha glimpse of a naked boobie. Bastards!

Why do Europeans generalize so much? I'm American, and I'm not obsessed with girls sunbathing topless. Oh by the way, didn't you hear that Paris banned it? I wonder why. So we are not the only ones who think it's risque to sunbathe topless. I do agree with you on one thing- the human body is beautiful and people everywhere should respect it more.

Tarnish me with that brush! I'm British and I know what the weathers like here, If I see a bird topless it means
A : The weathers hot
B : A total novelty that some birds got her jugs out!
Besides theres a lot more to have a go at an American for other than their appreciation of the female form.

I'm an American who works on the island of Curaçao, in the Netherlands Antilles. There are topless women on all the beaches here, including lots of American women. It's no big deal to me, and I'm mature enough to realize that it isn't about sex. I've traveled all over Europe and seen plenty of topless and naked women there. You are right though, most Americans don't know what to make of it simply because it is not common in the US.

some of all of these statements are true, its a ridiculous situation in america where you can get 200 porn channels but cant sunbathe topless, as for us europeans, we don't walk around naked, we're comfortable with women if they so choose to go topless, we're not prudish or so holy that we think its satan after gettin into the womens heads and taken over 'em. grow up statesiders

I didn't think the Americans had the monopoly on being obsessed with topless sun bathers, I have seen my husbands eyes out on stalks a few times when we have been on the beach and he is a Brit. For heavens sake lighten up hon.
