went to a school where the majority of the population was one race that was not your child's race?

My boyfriends boss is upset that his child is going to a school where the majority are black, and his child is white. I can see why he is upset (to a degree).... not because I am racist... far from it but I would be upset only because I would want my children to go to a school where the population is well mixed. I went to a school where the majority was white... and I felt a little ripped off because I did not get to meet many people of other cultures. Do you want your children to go to school where the population is mainly one color or would you want it to be mixed? Does it even matter so long as the school is a good one? How do you all feel about this?

I do not think my boyfriends boss is racist he is just worried about his child being treated differently because he will be the minority. The city I live in is HORRIBLY segragated. The white people live out west, the blacks live up north, and the mexicans/hispanics live in the south.

I'd like my child to go to a school that is a melting pot of different races, I believe it would better help em understand the concept of tolerance and diversity. I do agree on the story, of one predomenant race in the school, but wouldn't that be the same as a black going to an all white school? Teaching tolerance and diversity starts at home, we should all learn this, because that is what America is.

No not upset at all. My reason for this is because my son has a lot of learning problems, plus he has an autistic disorder. He attends a school kind of like a charter school, but it is in the city district. The former school just assumed that my son needed to be in a dh classroom setting without conducting the prober assessments. I was so ticked off and I decided to do something about it. I found his current school which he has been attending for 4 years. His current school has done and continues to do the correct testing to make sure he is in the proper classroom setting. I get updates all the time on his progress, his teachers have always been more than happy to speak to me or allow me to come and visit the classroom. I am equally grateful and thankfull that I found this school for my child. This school started out with a student ratio of approx 50 students. Now in their 7th year of being opened, they have expanded so much that they just purchased another school building. They now have over 3oo students between each of their 3 buildings. It is way cool.

Another thing I wanted to say was that I went to school where the majoritiy of the kids were black, I was just one of the about 100 white students of about 500 black students. I had a great time at the school and I still maintain friendships with some of my former class mates.

I guess it just depends on where you live and how the population is mixed.

If your boss is upset why doesn't he take his kid out of the school. I don't think it really should matter. In certain areas there are going to be more of one race than the other. I am black and I went to schools that were pretty much all white or I would be the only black person in my class.(All the way through college and in my profession) It wasn't a big deal t me. I am sure your boss wouldn't have an issue if everyone in the school was white and there was one person there who was other.

In any situation involving humans, the dominant population will abuse the minority population. The white child in a predominantly black school IS the minority student. And, just as black students in white schools, this kid is going to have to toughen up and develop an emotional, perhaps even physical, survival stratagey to navigate their environment. If they can't hack it, then they would be better off getting transferred to a school that has a more evenly diverse population.

I went to school whereby the majority is Chinese. It didn't borther me at all. Infact I feel special. I felt that I was always different from the others. It's a good feeling. I was not even treated differently. I had chinese girl friends too. My parents were not disturbed at all. They were happy for me. I guess it does not matter how the students look like or who they are. Because when they put on their uniforms. They are all the same. They are all students. The best part is that he will always be that special person that everyone in the school will never forget. I am surprise that till today there are people walking up to me calling my name and I don't even recognise them.

Your boyfriend's boss is totally out of line expressing his opinion on where the child goes to school. Why? Because your boyfriend's job has nothing to do with where his son goes to school. Any discrimatory actions on the part of his boss, because of where the child goes to school is a violation of EEOC guidelines. In other words, no employer can tell you where your kids must go to school; nor can he/she discriminate against you (the employee) for the same reason.
I attended a multi-cultural public school. An even mix of white, black & latino. I feel that I had a "well rounded" education becuase of it. In fact I'm still friends with many of my classmates.

Well, I don't want my children at a school that is all one ethnicity- I am African and Japanese, my husband is Hawaiian and European. There is NO WAY we're going to have a perfect school for our kids if you go by ethnicity or race.

Kids DO benefit from being around other children who look like them as well as being around others. You should ask your boss how his child feels about it. Is he/she happy or do they come home upset? The child will tell all ...

Good luck to your boss!

Well I went to a school where there was a mixed of blacks and hispanics so there was no problem with me (im hispnic), but I did see a couple of race issues, There was an asian girl going to school there and everyone made fun of her and bothered her alot, so I think it is important to have at least someone of your same race with you because if you are then you feel more comfortable like you click with that person.

Well I went to a all white school when I was in elementary and I hated it. Not saying all children have the same experience being the only one of their race at school. But I definitly didnt like being the only black person.

i went to a school where I was one of four non white kids (2 blacks, one Phillipino, One Latino) and it was fine. The kids didnt' care, met only ONE parent who hated my black as$. Did here "you're not like other black people" A LOT.

Have your boss put his kid is afterschool stuff where the kid can mix with more than one race. I'm sure the kid will be fine unless its a bad school (its not a bad school is it).

BTW, I think the black thing is an issue with him because black is mostly associated with poor EVERYTHING -Standards, Education, etc.etc.
