Okay, I will be doing a research project travelling the United States videotaping people for a documentary (if you know the best camcorder to get that's small and works great and compatible w/ a laptop/notebook i'd like to hear about it).

I need a laptop/computer that has wireless internet, firewall, an ethernet connection, cd/dvd burner (i want the dvd burner, not just the dvd player), I also need some kind of media software and it needs to have good sound and can do good video editing.

Any suggestions? What price range will I be looking at?

Thanks!!!!!!

You will NEVER get good sound from laptop speakers. Something high end like a macbook pro will give you so so sound. You should get headphones or external speakers. Be sure to get a camera with firewire (and a laptop too). This makes it much easier to move the video between the two w/o frame dropping quality compromise, etc.

All Apple laptops have a firewire port. iMovie and iDVD are very easy to use, and a good way to get started (and come with your new machine!) You can alway go to something more sophisticated like Final Cut once you get a little experience. For the kind of editing you will do on the road this is not necessary.

Depending on what sort of compression you use and the resolution of the video, you could end up eating 8-9 GB of drive space per hour of video (HDTV rates) so get as fat a drive as you can manage.

The person above is right about the desktop. You should go that route if you possibly can.

Cost? Sounds like you are in for a cool $6k by the time you buy a nice laptop, a nice camera, cables, DVDs, spare batteries, tapes, tripods, etc. etc. etc.

Even though Dell and Gateway are best bang for the buck XP-wise.... Apple is by far the best thing to use for internet and video use.

I've heard great things about iMovie and iDVD software.

You'll be glad you went Apple (and I'm a PC guy).
