I spent some time with Jimmy in the early days, and can tell you first hand that his greatest gift was not his legendary guitar licks, but his business skills. Initially, Jimmy and Paul Jones were two of the most active session men in the U.K. Jimmie had bought the name rights to the Yardbirds, and wanted to launch a new project. He spied Robert singing in a bar while searching for a blond front man, reminiscent of the popular Roger Daltry. Robert insisted on sticking with his drummer, John Bonham, and the line-up was complete.

Led Zeppelin was the first rock band to make big dough touring in the United States. Prior to Zeppelin, bands simply got a percentage, and skilled promoters raked in the largest share of profits. Jimmy, with some enforcement from his manager, ex-professional wrestler Peter Grant, made certain they controlled each aspect of the tour, and consequently, made an incredible amount of money.

Jimmy always had great respect for the blues, and did a spectacular cover of a standard that has withstood the test of time (You Shook Me by Willie Dixon). Still, when I think of my old friend, I think of him as a rock business genius and innovator.

Well I play guitar and drums. John Bonham has more of an influence on me, since I have his Ludwig signature drum kit, etc. I play Led Zeppelin songs more on the drums than guitar. But Jimmy Page, he's just absolutely amazing. One of my favorite guitarists of all time.

I think that Jimmy Page was the main person in that band. He was the star. The other members were good too, but I think that without Page, the band wouldn't survive. He was the main songwriter, and there wouldn't be a person NEARLY as good as he was for a replacement. So I think that Jimmy Page is the main influence on other people. Basically, he was the band.

Robert Plant was not the most talented necessarily. Each member was one of the best in the world at their part. But alot of bands have great instrumentalists and what sets one band apart from the others is a unique sound created by unique vocals. Bonham was my favorite but Plant had the most influence on their popularity.
Look at Van Halen. Eddie VH is an all-time top five guitarist but David Lee Roth, who is not even a talented vocalist, gave them the unique sound that put them over the top. Van Halen was successful without him but never to the level they started with. Roth was a failure on his own but I still believe his unique voice (combined with talented musicians) set Van Halen apart.

I'm a guitarist, so Page. Everyone in that band was so great though and made a huge impact on everyone.
