I concur with the Omaha Zoo suggestion. It's 100 times better than the zoo here and will actually cost you less... even by adding drive time in.
Also, if you're into motorcycle racing (crotch rocket types), the MAM (Mid America Motorplex) is about 20 miles South of Omaha (On I-29) on your way back to KC. It's on the West side of the interstate and the track is not only huge, but very well built for speed. There were about 150 bikes there on the day we headed back from Omaha (Sunday).

For a good day trip I would recommend Jamesport,MO, There is a large Amish community there and excellent Mennonite restaurant next door to the city hall where the food is tasty. The stores have and excellent selection of fresh herbs and spices and Hand-crafted items and homemade jams and jelly's. Also you can check out the handmade Oak and Cherry furniture.
For a good weekend trip you can't beat Branson,MO with all of the live entertainment, Silver Dollar City Amusement park and Three area lakes to play in.
Another interesting trip would be to Abilene,KS and the Eisenhower library

Head up to Omaha (about 3 hours away, depending where in KC you live). The Omaha zoo is one of the top 2 rated zoos in the country -- well worth the trip.

Visit Boystown in Omaha, Neb. or the shows and activities in Branson, Mo., check out the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Budweiser farm where they house the clydesdale horses. Locally, visit the Hallmark Company for a tour.
For any state, visit their tourism site on the web.

I saw this on a group trip in high school...I think you should at least check it out so you can say you've seen it. Bragging rights.

There's a space museum in Hutchison, KS that's in partnership with the Smithsonian, so it's high-quality and really interesting.
