There's nothing wrong with base closings when it is done for the betterment of the military, and not influenced by pork barrel politicians. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. And of course, closures were going on long before Bush came into office.

I was in the AF during many of the Clinton years and he was HATED by the vast majority of us. The lack of respect and outright disdain that was shown for the military during his administration was disgraceful. Budgets were slashed and major decisions were made with virtually no input from our military leaders. Although not the only reason, what Clinton was doing to the morale and functioning of the military was definitely a factor in my deciding to retire.

Why do you think Bush had a crappy Army, because of Clinton. I have been in the Military since Reagan was President. Clinton sucked, bottom line. At least with Bush we get raises for defending the good ol' U S of A so your dumb@ss can say stupid sh!T.

Draft-Dodger Clinton F***** the military up and President Bush has to spend the money to re-do the damage. The base closings started during the Carter years.

Bush is certainly a poor leader. I for one have noticed some pretty tough changes since Clinton left office, (i.e., attacks, war, and have you bought any gas lately?). I am not saying he made the best personal choices, but as a president, he was a strong leader. I wonder how many other people have made poor personal choices yet tend to blame others for theirs? I like to think of myself as Middle-of-the-Road, but I will do everything in my power to make sure we get another strong leader with America's best intentions in office after the mess that was made during these two terms. By the way, that will be an extremely tough job and I can't imagine who might want to have the task of digging us out of this hole.

So, is this supposed to prove that Clinton did NOT ruin the military?

Isn't it just as possible that Clinton ruined the military, and that Bush is just making it worse by doing the same thing?

William Cohen was not a decision maker as to such things.....he followed orders.......Clinton changed the armed forces from a strong force, to half it strength......which made it so that the base closings were necessary.........and our Navy is weak also.....do to those closings, and decommissioning of ships.....if it were not for the smart weaponry we have.....we could be taken over in hours by any mediocre force

umm...your link doesn't work...

1 - if Bush didn't support base closings, then there would be an uproar about unnecessary spending of keeping bases open...you want it to be bad for Bush either way
2 - just because Cohen was a "republican" doesn't mean anything...there are bad republicans...as democrats love to point out
3 - I'm sure you've endeared yourself to the "crappy Army" vets out there...way to go!
