A gift card and a nice card. That way she can use it for diapers or formula whatever she wants or needs.

Anything unisex. Like car seats, towels, pampers, wipes. I would put together a big gift basket for the baby, and don't forget to pick up something for the new mom too. Too often we forget about the mother. Tell her good luck. Someday, i want to adopt.

If she is adopting a newborn baby a gift card for a baby store like Babies R Us. This way what ever she doesn't get she can buy for herself. They are very handy to have.

It depends on the age & size. You could always get a toy first. Once you find out the sex and size, you can buy another gift that would fit the child.

First, I would ask her if she is planning on registering anywhere. If so, perhaps just get something on her list. If not, I like to pick something where color doesn't matter or pick neutral colors such as pastel yellow or green. If all else fails, disposable diapers, lotion, soap, and such are all helpful and timely gifts. Have fun shopping!!

Instead of getting something for the baby get the mom a special momento commemorating the special event, something she can keep forever

Maybe make up some kind of booklet of things that happened on the day the baby is born.
Something personal.

Yellow, green, purple are nice unisex colors. Or get a nice educational toy, those don't usually donote sex of the child.

I would go to this website...they have hand molding kits - a perfect memory/momento gift. If you're looking at spending more than this, I'd include a gift card.
I did hand molds for both of my baby boys, and they are priceless - their hands are only that size once!
