play football? He is 7 and play's baseball now. He's the catcher and he's GREAT at it. But my hubby wants to sign him up for peewee football and I think he's too little. He only weighs 60-70 lbs and that's soaking wet! What should I do?

"St Anthony" ...are you kidding me? My son is not gay! Why in the world would you think that? He plays catcher on his baseball team, loves all sports, hell he even has a girlfriend! He knows what Gay is and thinks it's gross.
To the rest of you....thanks for all the advice. My nephew is starting football this year, he is 5 but he weighs 100 lbs!
Plus he is as tall as my 7 year old!
Is this the size kids he'd be playing against?

Does he WANT to play football? I have some friends who signed their son up for baseball, football, wrestling, and basketball. He started developing migraines. It turned out that he loved baseball and didn't really want to do the rest, but didn't want to disappoint dad. If he does want to, let him try. He's at an age where you can expect a growth spurt any time now. The important thing is that he has fun with the sports he's playing.

He weighs plenty to play Pee Wee. The first weight class is usually around 65 lbs so he will be playing with kids his own size. I believe it can be easier on the body, long term, if you start a little later (age 12 or so) but the earlier you start him the better chance he has of being successful.
I played boys club football from age 6 to high school, three years of high school and one year of spring football in college and i don't regret a minute of it. My knees are pretty bad but it was worth it. I am currently coaching a team of 13 year olds, most of whom have not played before. A few are picking it up nicely but, for the most part, their lack of experience is obvious. If you decide to wait i wouldn't wait until they are 12 or 13. 8 or 9 at the most.

Ok there are at least 2 different leagues, the first is Pop Warner the other is your local organization. Not that I have anything against Pop Warner or anything but it is really competitive, meaning the kids don’t all play and they don’t really learn how to play so they can get to the next level they are more driven to get to Florida then on teaching the kids how to play. The Keystone League that we have in the Philadelphia area has developed kids who have quarterbacked their teams to the state finals. They teach you what to do and when to do it. Now that being said they have 55lb, teams so you can have your son learn to play and have fun. Remember don’t let him play flag football that sport starts bad habits with kids. So having him, play on the 55lb team is good for him and you husband. Tell him have fun

Football was the greatest sport to play as a kid. I started around that age playing flag football. I was also a little guy, but it doesn't matter, those pads and helmet are there for a reason. He'll love it at any age, well..except for the workouts and the running alot..

Let him play. Football will be a great way for him to express himself. Plus it will help build self confidence and reinforce the importance of respect and discipline. It's a win win situation, but only if HE WANTS to play. Do not force it on him. He will be fine. I was little at that age to, but I grew very quickly and I think football helped in that department. Once he gets into middle school he will begin strength training which will further enhance his confidence.

Mother, please understand that it is scary to have your sun play football. To a man it is a manly thing to do, for a woman it is a way of getting hurt. He will be playing with other children his age so it isn't as bad as it seems. Yes, you son can get hurt, but he can get hurt playing in the backyard with no protective clothing on at all. At least he will have some padding and helmet to absorb some of the shock. Children play with abandonment so the shock is not as hard as you think.

The leagues generally sign up kids by weight. So he should only be placed with kids the same weight as he is. He should be fine.

great is your opinion. let him do both. kids these days just specialize in sports. not good. once you get to high school, the kid needs to contribute to his/her school as best as they can by playing all sports. sign him up for everything
