There are a bunch of coutries that still drive on the left. The reason is because in old times people (mostly right-handed)carried a sword, and passed by anyone on the left to have the right open for use of the sword or weapon for defense. Napoleon was left handed, so he made his armies march on the right so that his left hand was open for defense. The French colonized much of Canada and the US, so naturally the US adopted the right-hand driving on the road, and also because the US wanted to shed any vestiges of Britian. Since the US were the most successful in making and selling automobiles, most of the world had to switch to right-side driving, especially since American cars were made for driving that way. Australia still drives on the left, as well as Japan, India, Ireland, among others.
