Anyone have suggestions of movies that have surreal, disturbing elements, but have substance? I'm not looking for "Faces of Death" type of hack work or the "Guinea Pig" movies from Japan that are simple shock. More like Irreversible, Eraserhead, Tetsuo type stuff.

Battle Royale, a Japanese film about a class of students who are captured by the government and forced to kill each other on a remote island. It's very violent, very bloody and very, very good! I recommend it. It will make you think for sure!

I'd second that vote for "Battle Royale"--its premise and content is shocking, provocative, and disturbing, but underneath it all are layers of social commentary and allegory, all quite more accessible than Tetsuo or other surreal films.

There is a funky thriller called "Mute Witness". The first time I watched it and saw the main killing scene, I was really disturbed but it was a good show.
