I would suggest you read this tutorial about keeping log files of your kids msn chats,.
Its the first in many tutorials being written on this site on how to protect your computer and family, and also theyre designing a program at the moment for release sometime next year;

My 10 year old son is online at home now and I watch very closely what he's doing. I have the parental controls installed. I use my IM catcher so that people aren't constantly sending IM while he's using it. He has been instructed not to open any emails from anyone without telling me first. I simply told him that there are bad people online sometimes who like to mess up people's computers with viruses and dirty messages. He mostly plays games and if an IM gets past the IM catcher, he simply hits cancel and keeps doing whatever he's doing. If you talk to your kids and let them know the deal, you shouldn't worry. Just be aware of what they're doing and who they're talking to. My son's not allowed into any chat rooms at all. You don't know who your kid is talking to. I don't care if it say 11 year old male who needs help with his homework. There could be a 35 year old perv on the other side of the monitor.

When I use to work for a local ISP, I did an entire evaluation for products that parents can use to protect and watch their kids while they are on the internet, even if the parents aren't there.
For a list of these reviews visit:

If they're wanting to explore the net, they will regardless what you try to do to stop them.
Any reading their chat logs is just plain violating.
Just have a talk with them about the do's and don'ts of surfing the net.
