Yes you used to have a partition which evidently has been removed during your reformat. A partition is where you split your hard drive up into two or more 'virtual drives' which to most intents and purposes act like seperate physical drives.

If you like you can read step by step about how to partition your drive again here - http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,73826-page,1/article.html

It sounds like you have one hard drive that was previously divided into two partitions. When you reinstalled the OS you may have deleted the second partition. Here's how to check:

Click on the Start menu. Go to Control Panel. Select Performance and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools. Double click on Computer Management. If it's now open, twist open the widget next to Storage, then select Disk Management. This will show you your physical drives and how they are partitioned. If you see one drive with one large partition, then you deleted the second partition when you reinstalled. If you see a second chunk then you can right click on it and reformat it (do NOT reformat your C drive!).

To me it seems like when installing windows you must have made only one partition. Thats a possible answer. Install again and create some partitions so that you can get C and D as you like .
