Because at the time it was written (you do know the Smurfs are originally a French comic book, right?) sexism and sex in general was not an issue. The concept of the Smurfs was that they all pretty much looked the same, except for some small features in the main characters. Smurfette was just one of the main characters that had been made a girl, to be a different type of character.
You people just always look for the dirty side of things.

In later episodes they added a little girl Smurf named Sassette, and even later they added Grandma Smurf. Smurfette was teasing the guys till she needed something then she'd give up a kiss to get what she wanted. Just like some females I know. So I think she didn't let anyone hit it.

No, there was a second female smurf named Sassette. But she was like a kid smurf. It was towards the end of the series. There was even a baby smurf(some smurf got reversed aging)

The honest answer to why there was only one female smurf was that Gargomele created Smurfette in hopes that her allure would lure the other smurfs into telling her where their village was so she could go back to tell him. I hate people trying to ruining my childhood memories if you are going to answer a question make a joke first then try to answer it with a damn answer. Besides some of you guys punchlines are starting to grow cobwebs cause I have seen them so much.

Only one female smurf around because, there wasnt enough male smurfs around to satisfy her after Gargamail had his way with her.

Smurfette was one of Gargamels spells gone bad. I don't know if the little blue body parts were in tact, or who claimed ownership. I stopped allowing my children to watch the Smurfs many moons ago when I heard Gargamel say, "Israel! What in the name of Beelzebub are you doing?!" I thought that was uncalled for.

Yeah, let's not forget....in the beginning, there were NO female smurfs.....Gargamel created one magically in order to infiltrate and subvert the smurf's society!

Uhm no. If I remember correctly there were three females: Smurfette (the blonde), Sassette (the redhead kid), and Nanny (the grandmotherly type).
