When I saw the challenge, I kept thinking about the incident that happen in Asian Football about a year ago....the player was not intentionally challenged but rather as he heads the ball towards the goal (he scored the goal by the way) he bump into an opposing player's head. The player went into the ground hard. Realizing the gravity of the situation, players from both teams, kneeled on the pitch and started praying. The player seizured and ended up dying on the pitch. It was a sad day, he literally died scoring a goal. and When I saw Thatcher's challenge and the condition of Mendes' body particularly his head, I knew it was bad right away.

No Schumachers was worse because it was premeditated. Thatcher's tackle was diabolical but both were running at speed towards a 50/50 ball so that is some excuse. He should have got a red card and maybe he will still be severely punished by the FA and the Police.

I have just Seen the tackle on TV. It was one of the worst challenges I have ever seen. Thatcher knew exactly where his arm was going and even made a forward gesture to maximise impact. Thatcher could have lessened the impact, he had time but chose not to do so. Therefore he must face a ban.

That was simply a shocking challenge, he knew exactly what he was doing he had no intention of winning the ball, as they say in football "he's done him". As a Pompey Fan i would love nothing more than to find him and cut his throat, and if he is still aloud to play football he's a brave man if he comes to play at Fratton Park i think he's just edged in front of Cristiano Ronaldo for a f.ucking hostile reception.

I hear the police have become involved, hopefully he will be charged with gbh/abh and go down for a long time, because I wouldn't trust the football authorities to do the right thing and ban him for life - if you do a little digging you see that he has lots of previous for this kind of thing.

What happened last night was common assault pre-meditated. If that had happened in the street an arrest would have been made. I hope the police and the FA get their act together on this one.

as a footballer i think it was very bad. He only got a yellow card for the assault which is the biggest joke of all. Shame on the ref. Calling themseves premiership refs!..Huhh!
