Here is what I do not get? Pluto is not a planet anymore, but its moon (Charon), and a large rock (Ceres) smaller than Pluto, and an asteroid within the belt between Mars and Jupiter are being considered for planet status? If Pluto is too small to be a planet and these three are smaller than Pluto, then how can they be considered for planet status? I'm confused. Someone please help me.

Pluto has been declared a "dwarf planet." The other members in this category are the giant asteroid Ceres and Pluto's cousin 2003 UB313.

the plan for the three new planets was apparently scrapped in favor of the 8 planets total plan. i tend to think that going with 8 is better. otherwise many other objects in the kuiper belt would have had to be considered for planet status and it would have confused the issued terribly. i imagine that everyone who grew up with pluto as a planet will continue to think of it that way.

A planet, not a planet,a planet, not a planet. Well maybe Mickeys' Pluto will wish for a name change just to keep his straight. And these guys get lots of money to confuse us wow. Nerd ,not a nerd,nerd.....nope definately not a nerd.

so, they decided yet? No big diference, anyway... planets weren't created or destroyed... just the denominations are changed...

To be honest, I prefer the 8 planet system (less names to learn for astronomy class)

By the way, thanks for saying it here, or I would have gotten on the train without knowing..

It's messed up my way of remembering them:

My
Very
Efficient
Memory
Just
Stores
Up
Nine
Planets.

Unless they change the name of Neptune to something beginning with an "E", I'm going to forget them all pretty sharpish.
