well, personally, I know I would never ask my kids to do this, BUT I'm not your mother...
....she might be coming from the stand point of not wanting to take care of them while you are away at school, if that is the case of living away from home.
or,
if you didn't ride much this summer, why have a horse at home not "earning his keep" (like mine). She might be thinking that the horse could be used at the ranch and kept in peek condition.
I would MAKE SURE the ranch you may have to leave him at is safe and they will take good care of your animal.
A suggestion to your mother would be an onsite lease to someone else. I have done that several times to keep my horse in condition, mainly while I was pregnant. People would come and take care of him and ride him and be resposible for him but I could always monitor how he was treated.
Good luck!

well maybe you can go to the ranch on weekends and ride.. Or maybe get a after school job to help pay for your lessons.

Lease them. That way they are taken care of while you cant take care of them. Good luck!
