I have given this a lot of thought. It seems that the time that Roosevelt was in office when the country started the direction of losing freedom. The country was suffering from the great depression and many steps were taken by the government to turn things around, in the process they started a series of events that were to continue to destroy our freedom. They started medling more and more into peoples lives. The government pretty much took on a whole other role. The government started taking responsibility for the economy and this has lead to the government taking responsibility for almost everything. 100 years ago men made their own way. Today, people and the government make their way together. The government is the daddy and we the people are it's children. Daddy please don't spank me again.

George Washinton probably would have shot a man if he tried to impose a seat belt ticket upon him while riding his horse and rightly so. The stank of Great Britain was strong in those days. America was a new haven, a place where people could start things all over from the beginning and do it right. Far from the clutches of the throne. Now that the stank of Great Britain has just about wore off, it's okay to be controled by the government. At least until the stank of government control comes back and it will ya know. It's not bad enough yet though, not nearly bad enough yet. It may be until another planet is settled on that freedom can be reestablished. I can't see the masses overthrowing modern governments today, the military power would just be too strong to fight against. The only chance to fix things is to start right now. Don't aks yourself why aren't people doing something about all this bs, ask yourself why aren't you doing something about it. I hope not to die under complete governmental control. This will likely be the case if I live very much longer though.

Go back to FDR and research that point in time. Look at the time before that it becomes fairly clear that the time FDR was in office was when the USA started losing our beloved freedom.

The problem with your question is that you assume America ever really was free. We have a horribly corrupt government that is run by corporations. Our entire country was founded on a lie. So you cant say that this has ever been a truly free country ok? Country was founded so that certain people could exploit other certain weaker people to their advantage and its been that way since the beginning and it will never really change. But if you want a more specific I would say that our country stopped being free when the oil boom started and a few key people in this country started amassing all of the wealth.

When Harry Truman adopted the containment policy following WW II. This ushered in the permanent war time economy, the UnAmerican House Committee fiasco and TailGunner Joe, the establishment of the NSA and the CIA, and the founding of the Military,/Industrial/Security complex.

I have not looked into it enough to know when it stopped being a free country, but the more I do find out the scarier it becomes. To the people who agree with our basic rights as Americans being violated, If you don't believe in the US Constitution, get the heck out of here. If you don't support the Bill of Rights, then YOU are Anti-American. Go move to Russia, Cuba, or China; move anywhere but get the hell out of my country. The only reason our soldiers are dying in this war is because the people that you degenerates voted into office sent them off to fight for someone else. Own up to your mistakes and quit trying to trade my liberty for your false sense of security.

Oh yes, this is just the worst place in the world to live - we have no freedom of speech, we are jailed constantly for the slightest whims, our TV networks and newspapers are constantly being shut down because of government crackdowns - there is rampant unemployment, and the entire country is a sea of chaos and upheaval... What country do you live in? We have more freedom than most countries can even imagine. We can travel wherever we want, with little or no interference. We have the freedom to become whatever we want, start any kind of business. We can follow any religion one could conjure up, or none at all, if that is our desire.

In what way, exactly, are we not free anymore? What are the constraints on our freedom? Get real, you've listened to too many pissed off spoiled brats who don't want to or don't know how to make a better lives for themselves, so now you have yourself convinced that this is a police state. Go live in China or Cuba for awhile and report back to us... really, I would be so interested in your report.

It would of started when the Federal Government began to grow. That point in American History is FDR. The government started to grown from that point on and the sheep keep looking to the two main parties for the answer.

I would also like to say that by man's nature he is authoritarian to some extent. Man wants to control his surroundings this has the effect that when man becomes empowered he wants to control things in his favor. This makes government have more power and this makes totalitarianism.

we have never been truly free, back in the day only land owners, (whitemen) could vote, look at the history time line,we are only as free as is convienent for the elected government at any particular time, now the gov. spies on everything, and the same technology we use to make life easier just simplifies the process for this to happen.if u think u are free, try walking down the street with a pistol on your side, try telling an elected official that you think they are full of b.s. and see what happens.

The day Modern/Western medicine took over and decided
our health for us. I cannot think of any institution
aside from the Catholic church that has caused more
deaths, and needless suffering.

Freedom over all? Probably soon after the founding fathers
bit the dust.
