My friend has just been offered a job where it requires him to work 6 days a week, from 4am till noon and he'll get a gross wage of £1300 a month. They said he'll get 3 weeks holiday a year, and he has got to work Good Friday, but other than this he gets Bank Holidays off.
Can someone tell me if this is legal bearing in mind it's a 6 day week with a start time of 4 am, and such a poor wage. I'm certain that the employer would be taking advantage.

im afraid not its a 40 hour week no matter when you start, and he is getting slightly more than the minimum wage for his efforts, three weeks annual leave is the legal minimum and the bank holidays are counted as discretional.
tell you bud to look a bit harder as that not worth the hassle of getting out of bed for,,

48 hours a week is legal if your friend agrees to it.......he should get 20 days holiday a year, which may or may not include Bank Hols........£1300 a month isn't such a poor wage.....not great, but not bad. For further advice go to Citizens Advice....

My first impressions are that it isn't strictly illegal, just not very pleasant. Let me go over some points:

- I believe yearly entitlement is 4 weeks/yr however if he gets bankholidays off, then that would fulfil that requirement.

- 4am - 12pm is 8hrs/day although this will more than likely include an hours unpaid break, making 7hrs/day or 42hrs/week which is perfectly legal.

I wouldn't/couldn't work those hours, but from a legal point of view it is reasonable.

What's minimum wage in England? I mean, that's more than 6 dollars an hour in what you're describing. No, the employer is not taking advantage. Plus, he gets 3 weeks vacation....dangggg

It's difficult to answer with knowing what the Employment Standards are in your country, with regards to the maximum amount of hours worked per week and when overtime kicks in.

If this is a larger firm, then it is most likely legal. They probably have their own legal departments to make sure everything is kosher.

Is it a good job? Maybe not, and your friend should weigh his options before accepting. If he commits, then give it 18 months and see how things progress.

As far as I know, it's legal to offer almost anyone almost anything. If your friend doesn't think it's a good deal, let's hope he doesn't have to take it. An employer isn't obligated to offer anyone anything - is he?

u dont say wot type of job, eg. supermarket cashier but i think that as long as their hours dont exceed 48 and that they are paid minimum wage then employers can put in any stipulations.

If he doesn't agree with the terms then don't sign the contract and look for another job.
