you do not mention if you are playing music from a CD or a music file on your computer or from a website. All can happen and all for different reasons.

What version of Media Player are you using?
If it is older than Version 9 (Win2k,Win98,WinMe) then get the it from microsoft.

What is the source of the music?
CD or music file on harddrive? Get the new WMP 9 and if the problem still happens and the CD is not scratched, then your computer is too busy. You have too much software running in background and not enough physical memory to keep the program from being swapped out to virtual memory. Get more physical memory for you computer. This is called UPGRADING YOUR RAM. 512Meg minimum for Windows 2000, Win98, WinME. Don't skimp. Max out memory. Memory is cheap.

Internet? same as above or your connection is too slow and the buffer is running out. You need to change the buffer to download 100% before it starts playing the music.

Try upgrading or reinstalling Media Player. If not, try using WinAmp.
