Less than kneecapping, I should think. And the threat of permanent disfigurement and disablement doesn't seem to stop joy riders from joy riding in Ulster.

There are many people, not just youngsters, who are undeterred by the proposition of disproportionate punishment. That's one reason the death penalty doesn't have much deterrent effect.

ASBOs (Anti-social behaviour orders) are sought given out just so the authorities can say they've done something. It's sort of like setting up a commission under a well-paid senior figure and writing a report. Often a hollow gesture, but politically expedient.

If enforced properly yes they can be, people in the area are normally leafleted showing them a picture of the person with the ASBO. So they can report if they see the person in an area where they shouldn't be.
If the people in the area don't bother informing the police then I would say the ASBO would have little effect.

If someone told me i would get an asbo, i would laugh my head off, smile, then go for a pint, probably keying the officers car, as i went, - my imaginary teenage son said to me, as he held a knife to my throat.

course not they are a joke, just another media headline, to try and get some more votes from the stupid/gullible

i know people wit those ankle things, who have taken them of, taped ot to their dog, and gone out clubbing.

they just realised, that making the people scared, was a great way to make them listen, and making them think they might be a bit safer, wins votes

look at the sex offenders register

so what we do... snort laugh, is take all the names in the database, and put a little computer tick next to a bunch, and call it something, and people will vote more... wow.. bunch o *******

its like fining people that claim benefit.... whats the point
its like putting homeless people in jail.....

kids love asbos..ill take one with fries please..

No they are not. Any self-respecting yob without an asbo is classed as a wimp by his peers.

Just another attempt by this government to plaster over the caverns of the crime wave.

The only punishment that works, is prison.

It would really depend upon the situation but nowadays asbo's are worn like a medal which prob defeats their purpose.

Not really. Anymore than an injuction stops someone breaching it.

The main thing though is that if they get caught breaching, they can get arrested and CAN, should the judge or magistrate be in a bad mood - or living in the real world - be sent to prison.

Some people WANT to go to prison though!!

Some kids now want to receive ASBO's, it gives them respect in the eyes of their peers. I bet w*nker Bliar wasn't expecting that inevitable outcome from his "flagship policy". Stupid c**t.

No.It's just something for them to brag about to their pals. The British legal system is way too soft on young people of today and they damn well know it. Hence why they often reoffend and do not seem to care about breaking the law.

No, but they do make it easier to lock up the little sods.

Nothing seems to deter them, but at least they don't get as much chance to do it.
