So many people think they have a phobia. Too many people don't understand the difference between a phobia and a simple fear of something. For one, a phobia is almost crippling. It interferes with your life, significantly, and prevents you from doing things that you would otherwise do if not for the phobia. Not only that, but it must cause you distress ... the phobia must bother you. Another thing, it MUST be irrational, and you must realize it is irrational for it to be a phobia. Those are just some things though, there are many more factors that distinguish a phobia from a fear.

For example, a person may be afraid of lightning and cry and hide during a storm ... but a person with a phobia of lightning will obsessively check the weather, making sure there are no storms coming. They will refuse to leave the house if they hear it's going to rain. They will insist on all sorts of storm emergency procedures to ensure their safety. They will learn everything they can about lightning and how it is conducted, how best to avoid it, etc. etc. It will seem "crazy" to other people. Most important in a phobia though, is you have to realize that it is irrational, and it MUST significantly interfere with your life.

There are many ways to overcome phobias, the most common ones involve systematic desensitization, carefully carried out in controlled laboratory settings. Usually overcoming a phobia requires the help of a professional, and many "training" sessions. As for me, yes I have a phobia of vomiting ... I avoid anything I possibly can that might make me sick ... even slightly sick. I haven't thrown up since I was five, probably why I have this phobia.

Dinosaurs really frighten me. I have a hard time watching movies on the big screen that have dinosaurs or anything similar, like dragons. At the Return of the King, I almost broke my fiance's hand from squeezing it so tight when the flying dragonlike creatures carrying the ringwraiths were onscreen. I squeezed his hand and stopped breathing. I'm not sure that's really dealing with a fear, but that's how I react. I also have phobias of sharks (I've always been afraid of sharks) and plane crashes.

I have two real fears and they are the fear of wrists, and the fear of the ice cream man. I know this sounds weird, but it is very true. When I was little, I watch the movie The Ice Cream Man and every since then, I have been horrified of ice cream men. Luckily, I live in the country and there is no ice cream trucks driving around with that creepy music playing. My fear of wrist is 1000000 times worse however! My wrist are small and I can see the blue veins and that really freaks me out! I am afraid of accidentally cutting myself and dying. My friends know about this and are always pretending to cut themselves and I always gag and get real light headed. If I see something gross in a movie, my wrist and arms begin going numb and I get real weak. When I wear a watch and bracelets, I keep them pushed up on my arm so they don't touch my wrist and when I wear clothes with long sleeves, I make sure the sleeve goes past my hand in length. I don't like people talking about wrist or touching mine. I don't know how I got this way, but just typing this stuff makes me feel nauseous.

I don't know if I have a phobia or a social issue. I don't like to go to my kids school, I don't like being at their games and practices. I do it, but I always feel that people are talking smack about me. I hate two faced people and I have encountered so many.

Shots! It once took the nurse and my mom to hold me down for some shots when I was younger. It's not as bad now, but I still act like it's the end of the world or something... Ooh and spiders.. I had one in my bathroom once and I shot outta the shower and didn't go back in for a few days until I knew it was gone...

YES. Roaches. I scream and run to the bathroom and call my husband and he comes and takes care of them.

Other bugs, I'm fine. Giant spiders. Anything. But if I spot a baby roach, I'm dead to the world until it's gone.

(I think it might have arisen from the terrifying experience of actually being chased at 30 miles an hour by a German cockroach.....oh, that still gives me nightmares...)

Can't get on a ladder, stand on the edge of a cliff, tall building etc.
Ironically, I'm ok in an open cockpit plane because I'm strapped in.

I pay someone to paint my house.

Oh yeah - roaches aren't exactly on my hit list either.
