you shouldn't be able to see it......if you see red spots somewhere on your foot usually that is called petechiae......usually caused by something tight restricting blood flow........as far as more information about blood clots.........go to www.webmd.com and search for information.

You might could see a clot if you had damaged or ruptured a blood vessel or tissue near the surface of your skin...but this would really just be what most call a bruise or hematoma.
It appears that you are asking about a clot occurring inside a vessel itself...When a thrombosis (blood clot) forms in a superficial vein in the foot or leg it is recognizable as a linear, firm cord. That is because these veins are inflamed and swollen, and because they are located just beneath the skin. They may appear red and feel warm from the inflammation. They are usually painful and very tender to pressure. Ultrasound or contrast dye exams are generally the best way to diagnose blood clots in deeper veins.
The site I took this info from is very informative and goes on to state that a clot in a superficial vein, or Superficial Phlebitis, is not a cause for alarm. You may still want to see your physician to rule out the risk for other more serious issues though.
Hope this helps.
As an edit, I would like to echo mrcricket in that - as mentioned in the text I pulled from a medical website - a clot near the surface of your skin is not a cause for alarm as the vessels are too small for it to dislodge and travel to a place within your body where it could cause damage.
I am a pre-medical student with over 40 hours of biological science coursework under my belt. As I mentioned, you may still want to visit your "Docker", but I would not view this as a life threatening situation (if what you are experiencing is indeed a Superficial Phlebitis). You know your body, however, and should listen to what it is telling you and respond accordingly.

This Site Might Help You.
RE:
Can you see a blood clot if it is near the skin?
If you have a blood clot on the top of your foot would you be able to see it? If so, what does it look like? What are they symptons? How would you know if you have a blood clot?

In Yahoo a web search for "blood clots in arms" will give you 64 results and in Google you would probably get a few more.

The clot usually follows a course of the larger vessels, not those of the size at the surface.

i had a blood clot once in my upper arm it looked like a huge bruise with a large bump in the middle of it the bruise would sometimes get larger if i were to use that arm a lot. If you think you may have one you should immediatly go to the hospital.

Blood clocks re in the vain not under the skin. there are some symptoms in some people . THE ONLY WAY TO TELL IS TO GO TO THE DOCKER AND HAVE A ECHO GRAM ORA ULTRA SOUND. THEY CAN ALSO RUN DYE IN YOUR VEIN'S TO LOCATE IT.
