Ancient peoples used storage batteries to do simple electroplating, and possibly used it to shock people to create 'mysterious' events for ceremonies.

At this point, the basics of electrical current must have been known- you needed some sort of power source and some sort of circuit that the victim or item to be plated completed.

One of the guys we recognize as descovering at least part of this is Alessandro Volta, the person the 'volt' is named for. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessandro_Volta). It is pretty obvious, however, that what he really did is to refine things that were already somewhat known.
