Air is a concrete noun - it refers to something that exists. Expenses is considered abstract because there are so many types.

Air - Concrete. It can be felt, tasted, smelled, and in some cases, seen.

Expenses - Abstract. It cannot be determined by one of the five senses, although some people think they can be felt (Ouch!)
