Assuming your old windows are wood double hungs. Use a glazing tool (@$4.00) and pry the interior trim (about 1 1/2 in. located on the jamb and header) off. Try not to break it because it can be re-used. Then with a chisel and hammer remove the interior parting stop and pry up the old lower sash. cut the rope with the balance and let it fall into the interior wall. With a hammer gently tap the wood around the top sash to loosen it. (typically painted shut). Once loose, lower the sash and cut the balance ropes. This will allow you a clear opening for the new custom fit window to go in.
Make sure the replacement window fits before you tear out the old window. Instructions for installation of the new window are usually printed on the back of the manufacturers label.
Simonton or CertainTeed are 2 of the best vinyl replacement windows made. Good luck!

If you don't feel like losing your entire HDD you can just upgrade the qindows instalation (assuming you want to upgrade and not downgrade that is).

If you don't care if you lose your files you can boot form the windows CD. Delete the partition the OS in currently on, format a new partion and install the OS on that one.
