The jeans you bought were a profit to them. Since there is alot of competition for your dollar, especially in clothing, they use store credit because they do not want to lose the profit.

It mainly started when it was a big thing in the late 80's-early 90's that girls were buying clothing, wearing it once for what they bought it for, then returning it for a full refund since they left tags on, kept reciepts, etc...
There were several stores (I don't remember names) that had legal issues from the people that later bought the clothing. Some woman ended up with a bathing suit that had been worn. So when she went to wear it, she got an infection (yeast maybe?) from the previous owner. Yes, she was dumb for not rinsing her clothing before wearing. BUT, the store had made no provisions about customer safety when they had taken the suit back. They did not inspect it before resale; it was proven in some court.
This was one way stores started to protect themselves and thier future customers. If the buyer can't get his/her money back, then he/she will be less inclined to rotate clothing in and out of the stores for wear and return fraud.
Yes, I know what you mean about how easy it is to make a new tag (I worked retail in college). I also have seen people try this kind of scam to get their money back on an item that has obviously been worn at least once. A pair of shoes was brought back, the top and sides were clean, but they forgot about the dirt on the sole. A dress came back with sweat stains under the arms. A blouse was returned wrinkled at the waist where it had been tucked in for a long period of time. All of these little things don't come from repeated trying on in dressing rooms or from hanging on the rack. They had all been worn outside after purchase.

If you buy, it puts money in their pocket. If you return, money comes out of their pocket. It is obvious which they prefer and it is not the one that is going to make you happy.
If they don't think you will be a profitable customer in the long run they don't care whether you leave the store happy.

Anymore most stores give store credit, it gets you to come back at least one more time to buy, we can thank the shoplifters and folks who abuse the return policies for these new ways

because people buy or steal stuff, wear it, then return it for cash. easier to just give store credit.
first of all, if you shop there often, store credit isn't a bad thing.
second of all, to avoid this hassle in the future, try on your stuff in the store. that's what the dressing rooms are for.

You can only thank the thoughtless people who try to cheat retailers for this policy. I have two businesses, and people lie, cheat, and steal, and they just cause the price of things to go up and to make strict return policies.

Sounds as though you are in the habit of returning goods.Make sure that they are what you want before you leave the store.Do you never think of trying things on before you buy?
