Keeping CDs are a really good idea. Because, for now, any music sold online has DRM in it. Meaning, you can't put it on music player besides the iPod. Should Apple go out of buisness, we all hope not, you will have to resort to other players. But iTunes music can't be played on other players such as the upcoming Zune. Therefore, you'll have a bunch of useless songs that are essentially 'stuck to the computer'. CD's on the other hand, can be compressed into any format to be used on any player. iTunes sold music does not have the versatility of CD's, because you need to keep your account in order to be able to authorize other computer to play the music. Because iTunes music may only be played on five computers, no more. And of course, iTunes music can only be played on iPods and iTunes equipped computers. Therefore, CD's are more versatile and guarantees that your music collection is future-proof.
Despite all those cons, I myself purchase iTunes music.

I would keep the CDs.
Or as an alternative, use a 3rd party program to convert the CDs to high quality MP3s, and then back them all up onto blank DVDs (preferable due to large storage size) or blank CDs.

Itunes can be very controlling about what it lets you do with your music. And having back ups of all your music is always a good idea.

Personally I can't stand Itunes, but if you get an IPod, you're stuck with it.

It depends on what you like. On itunes when you get the music you don't get the cd cover or art, but in itunes the cover of the cd comes up when you play it, If you burned all your cds to your ipod you could sell them, and make a lot of money, just make sure that you back up your computer incase it crashes. Well Good luck. I hope i answered your question.
