It is an unfair label or stereotype. The typical stereotype is poor, white, crack smokers, uneducated. They are not like travellers because the sites are well established with full facilities and they are rented usually under terms of 12 month leases, as opposed to halting sites. Also they are not part of any clans as in the UK and Ireland.
Some sites are purchased, deeded.
Not all mobile home parks are trashy, though. Some are actually quite nice, with club houses, well landscaped, beautiful gardens, etc.

Trailer trash is a term that broadly captures someone who has no moral compass, low character, and is often indignant despite their ignorance.
It's derived from a class of Americans who typically live in mobile home parks and gained a reputation on daytime television shows (Jerry Springer, Montel Williams, etc.) for their foul behavior, illicit relationships, poor education, and a selfish world view.
The expression has changed in usage to become an insult towards people who act rudely or innapropriately.
For example, my wife was at an upscale mall with two children in a stroller, waiting to board an elevator (lift!). When the doors opened, there were a few people already inside. A well dressed middle-aged woman was standing directly inside the doors. My wife said "excuse me" as she inched forward and the woman set her eys and didn't make room for my wife to enter. My wife repeated herself with a little more volume and the woman let out a loud exagerated sigh and stepped aside while shaking her head.
When the doors closed, my wife looked her in the eye and said "if you can't treat people with respect, maybe you should go back to whatever trailer you crawled out of." Another woman on the elevator burst out in a stifled laugh because she totally agreed.
It was obvious that the woman had probably never set foot in a mobile home, but her behavior was reflective of "trailer trash".

Trailer trash = Chavs.
They live in Trailers as they don't have so many council estates in America. But they are basically chavs.

The Democrat definition is any one who is poor and has to live in a trailer, the Democrats think that Republicans live in trailers and think we are all red necks too.

Do you have mobile homes in UK? Usually the people that live in them here are low income. Mobile homes are cheap and people that don't have much money live there. I am by no means looking down at them like a snob. I'm not like that. I might be in one someday myself.
