Hawaii was an American Territory before WWII (that's why we had Pearl Harbor there). Before 1900, Hawaii was an independent island chain with a King.
There is NO truth that Japan owned Hawaii.

I think what your Japanese friend was trying to say, perhaps, is that before American annexed Hawaii as a territory, Japan had made territorial claims upon it. The King of Hawaii actually invited the Japanese military over to protect Hawaii against the Americans and the Japanese threatened to fight if the Americans were to take over the island.
Obviously, that didn't happen, as the Japanese decided to back down, and it was eventually negotiated that Hawaii would be an American protectorate.
Imagine of the Japanese HAD NOT backed down then. What would have happened? If the U.S. had not been able to claim Hawaii, then there would have been no Pearl Harbor. Wow. Makes you think, doesn't it.

Yea. You can never trust Japanese people (no pun intended) -- Well, at least him. Have you ever been through a history class? Hawaii was claimed as a US state on August 21, 1959. Hawaii was admitted to the union as our 50th state. Before WWII, Hawaii was it's own independent island nation.

No, The state of Hawaii became a territory in the late 1800's. It didn't become a U.S. State until the 1960's. Your Japanese Is full of crap. KNOW YOUR AMERICAN HISTORY! IT IS IMPORTANT!
