Who knows? This is what I hate about hype. A team may not even think that is THAT great, but then the media feeding frenzy gets going and before you know it, they've already crowned a national champion. Of course the thing is that this team is only national champion on paper and before the season has even begun. The fact of the matter is, it's so much Notre Dame fans that are going around raving about how awesome the Irish are, it's the media. Go back a couple years and you'll see that it was this same preseason hoopla surrounding Oklahoma and USC that kept undefeated Auburn from getting a shot at the national championship.

I love college football, I love reading what people have to say about the upcoming season, but I truly believe that the media has lost control and gotten carried away. Not just this year with Notre Dame, but in general. Rather than telling us who is going to be good and predicting the national championship months ahead of time, they should simply suggest who might be good, who has the weapons and the returning starters, and leave the public to figure the rest out. Not like it matters because in a week or so when the games actually begin, all that hype will be even more useless than it is now.

That said, is Notre Dame for real? Well, they've got arguably the most potent offense in school history, coupled with a defense that had USC on the ropes before letting down on 4th-and-9. They held Michigan to 10 points in what was supposed to be an offensive fireworks extravaganza, but gave up 44 points to Michigan St. and 600+ yards to Ohio St. Then again, they do return many of their defensive starters (7-9, I believe) which will certainly help. Many people make the comparison to Ty Willingham's 8-0 start in 2002, but it's a Tale of Two Teams. The 2002 version that went undefeated before losing 3 of their last 4 lacked any semblance of offense and relied largely on luck. Last year's team played in only four games that were decided by a score or less: three point losses to MSU and USC, a 7-point win over then-#3 Michigan, and a 7-point win over a Stanford team trying desperately to become bowl-eligible in their final game. That said, will Notre Dame be good this year? Almost certainly, though their tough schedule and defense could still pose some problems. Are they for real? Ask me again in January and we'll see where things stand.

I KNOW that ND is overrated every year because of their name and they make good news. They have lost something like 6 of the last 7 bowl games.

Oh. And like half the teams they beat last year ended up with loosing records. So even the teams they beat were way overrated.

No, because they have to many holes defensively. And with that tough schedule they are bound to drop at least 2 games through out the course of the year.

Yes, they are - but their D isn't good enough to go undefeated. Top ten team with 1-2 losses and a BCS bid.

remember when Willingham brought immediate "success" to ND, and then they sucked every year after that? Well, they're ripe for that same type of scenario.
