I live in Canada so I know the laws are a bit different if you live in the US. But I have been certified in Car seat safety and installation. Infant seats normally are for babies 5 to 20 or 22 lbs depending on brand and usually 26 inches in length again, depending on the brand. Check on the side of your car seat because it will tell you. Also, babies need to ride rear facing until they are a year old. So you can get convertible car seats that accomadate a bigger child and still keep them rear facing. It is the safest position for them....rear facing and in the middle back seat position (if possible). Until they are a year old, they may appear to be strong and healthy and able to suppport themselves if facing front but trust me (ive seen the videos) babies are not physically developed enough in the upper torso to handle crashes. When the seat is rear facing, in order for it to work properly, it still needs to be in the reclined (bucket) type position. The mechanics work better as to how the seats and harnesses operate ( think like half an egg shell, made to cradle and rock up if in an impact.) hope this helps

The laws we have in Canada are that the child has to be at least a year AND 20 lbs to be in a forward facing seat. The infant seat can be used until then, unless he is getting too big for it, then switch to an upright, rear facing. Then when the child reaches 40 lbs, can go into a booster seat (they are by law to be used to 80 lbs and/or 8 years old).

It is up to you!!!!!!!!! If you read to box for the INFANT rear and forward facing car seats, you can put a baby in them at birth. The infant "carriers" are for convenience. Just make sure you buy an infant rear and forward facing seat. My son was a preemie and I still put him in it at 8 months. As long as he is rear facing until 1yr AND 20lbs it's fine. My son enjoys it a whole lot more being upright to play with toys. He is almost a year but still is not 20lbs, so I can't turn him around until he hit 20lbs.

We put our baby in one when she was 6 months because she could sit up very well and was tired of laying down in the other seat. Make sure they are still rear-facing though until they are at least 20 lbs but preferably a year old.

Its by weight. Read your car seat manual, or read the boxes of the uprights. They will tell you what age or weight the child should be before being in an upright seat.
Usually they ride for just about a year in an infant carrier.

As long as he meets the weight requirements, he can start sitting in an upright seat as soon as you want to put him in one. Some upright seats are made for infants. We have one for our older son that will hold anything from a newborn to an older toddler (it converts to a booster seat).

You can put him a rear facing car seat from day one. You don't have to use an infant carrier car-seat at all. My car seat if for 5lbs rear facing up to 80lbs forward facing . Just check with the reconditions on your car seat.

Read the limits on the carseats. Your infant seat will have an upper limit on length and weight and the convertable seat will have a lower limit on weight that he must meet before he can move into it. Mine all changed seats around 6 months I think.

Most states say one year AND 20 pounds, this means even if he is a year old, if he doesnt weigh 20 pounds,or under a year and weighs 20 pounds, you should keep him in a rear-facing safety seat. When he is one, if he weighs enough, get the front facing seat.
