because black and white are two absolute opposites, they are used to describe two positions which are at total odds.
Gray, on the other hand, can come in various shades (e.g. very dark, slightly dark, light, and very light)...this is used to indicate that there is no absolute position which can be taken, since gray is neither white nor black, and it could lean more to one than the other...

Wow... I can't really compete with his answer lol but lets see...
Shades of Gray...if you want my life meaning..means Yes in between but normal. You can have a bad day "Shade of black", or a good day "Shade of white", but there are our normal days "Shades of grey". Our lives aren't perfect and there are times when those grey shades appear in our life.
Alright...now my answer may not be as interesting but thats just my meaning for it :)

I agree. It is often used in questions of 'right' & 'wrong'. Most of those are more ethical and moral questions that some would perceive as either at one end of the spectrum or the other, but if thought about and considered, the real answer falls somewhere in the middle.

hey! This is right up my alley. I suppose I use the term because nothing is absolute. Life (the gray part) is in between the two endpoints (black and white) of birth and death (you figure out which is which).

Neither good nor bad
Neither black nor white
Neither sweet nor sour
Not the best nor the worst
Neither cold nor hot......it's lukewarm. Somewhere in-between the two opposites.
Like a cloudy sky. It's not sunny -yet it's not raining either.
In life it means that something or someone isn't the best, but they aren't the worse either.
